2011 Syrah Trenton Estate Vineyard

$38.00

Co-fermented with 5% Viognier. Aged for 18 months in neutral French oak barrels.

Racy, vibrant, violet laced fruit reminiscent of French plums and licorice with a bit of kid leather. Amazing brightness to the fruit. Mouthwatering acidity brings you back for just one more sip. The depth of tannins combined with the vibrant acidity argue for a long life.

2012 Pinot Noir Trenton View Vineyard

$39.00
Also known as “The Vineyard Next Door”. When we tasted this there were two schools of thought. Chris and Cody felt it needed another year. Tom and Karen (the owners) sucked it down and pronounced it ready for prime time! I was somewhere in between. However, with a bit of air it not only opened, it blossomed so I broke the tie. Out it comes!Tasting notes: Lighter color as is typical of this vineyard. The aromas initially are of a cherry/rhubarb compote. Lots of red berries as well. Very soft entry, quite elegant, low tannins, good but not overwhelming acidity. 2012 was a big crop year after two very tiny ones and it seems to be reflected in the softness and approachability of this wine, although if past vintages serve as any guide it should stiffen up a bit over time and provide pleasurable drinking for at least a decade. But why wait! 411 cases bottled in August 2013. (BTW, this hasn’t been tasted by any critics yet but Wine Enthusiast gave the 2011, a supposedly inferior year, 94 points,! ‘Nuff said.)

2012 Syrah Great Oak Vineyard

$38.00

Planted in the mid-1990's, this low yielding vineyard has always produced wines on the wild side. However, with increasing vine age, the wines have begun to tame down a bit. Although theyhave lost none of their power, they have just taken on a bit of grace.

Tasting Notes:

Dark. Very dark. Dense but vibrant. Plums, saddle leather, bacon, lavender. Long. These are my first impressions. Sometimes first impressions are the best!

2013 Pinot Noir Trenton Estate

$74.00
It is hard to believe that more than 40 vintages of this wine have been produced! But even, with age, the vines seem to always have something special to say and 2013 was no different.Never a particularly dark wine, this year it is a particularly brilliant deep ruby red. The nose is more reminiscent of the 2011 than the 2012. While fully ripe, it is nonetheless almost laser focused in its purity. Brambly red fruit and wood spice, which is very typical for pinot noirs on Laguna Ridge. In the mouth it has something akin to red licorice but more serious. Deep but not sweet, with acid present but not prominent and the tannins only providing structure. I have to stop saying that a vintage is one of my favorites yet, but not until next year! Maybe!).

2013 Zinfandel Bastoni Vineyard

$30.00
Located in what I refer to as the Riebli Valley, just a few miles east of Highway 101, this sight has been farmed by the Bastoni family since 1906. Martha Bastoni and her husband, Russ Messanna currently farm it. Although the old vines are gone, the replants are going strong and are meticulously cared for. And even though we have only been making wine from this vineyard for three years, it exhibits what I have come to view as a classic Bastoni nose of deep blue tinged fruit, like a cross between boysenberries and blueberries. Contrasting to Russian River Valley, the east side of the valley gives the wine more of a white pepper, red fruit, and juniper berry. Good but not overwhelming tannin or acidity, and medium to full body.

Fairly dark color for pinot noir. Typical aromas of complex dark red fruit intermingled with oriental spice (cardamom, cinnamon, clove, nutmeg) with a bit of forest floor/underbrush/bramble. 2014 Syrah Solas Vineyard

$38.00
Our first vintage from Solas Vineyard, a neighboring vineyard on Vine Hill School Road, also known as Walker Vine Hill. This 100% syrah is made much like our other syrahs, with natural fermentaion in open top fermenters, pressed into nuetral French oak barrels and aged for just under two years. This syrah is a great example of cool climate syrah, being bright in fruit and pretty on the pallet. Beautiful magenta color. Chaulky, blueberry compote, silky tannins that grow on the finish. Still developing in the bottle, worth drinking now and aging.

2014 Tannat Matthews Station

$34.00
The best know examples of wine made from an almost unknown grape are from the Madiran AOC. Madiran is in southwest France, near the Pyranees Mountains in an area referred to as Northern Basque Country. There are also large plantings in Uruguay, where it was introduced in the 1800’s by immigrants from France. In California, it was know since the 1800’s but it wasn’t until the owners of Chateau Beaucastel, in partnership with the Haas Family, established Tablas Creek Vineyards in Paso Robles that it became an accepted grape in the US. They petitioned the BATF and it was added to the list of permitted varietal names for wines in the US. There still isn’t a lot planted and very few pure tannat bottlings exist: A great year in which to make this wine. Aromas of fresh crushed black raspberries and not much more. Not much more is needed! (It is actually more complex than that but I will let you decide what the other descriptors should be!).

2015 Chardonnay Ritchie Vineyard

$45.00

The grapes that make this wine comes from one of the older blocks in this vineyard. The original plantings were 100% barrel fermented in French oak, aged sur lies with battonage (lees stirring) once a month. Full malolactic fermentation took place. The wine was aged 10 months in Barrel.

The vineyard is highly coveted with numerous winemakers sourcing from here. Everyone gets their own dedicated row (or half as the case may be). However, not all Ritchie Vineyard wines are created equal. Throw in personal preferences with at least one winery picking 2 weeks ahead of everyone else and a couple wineries on the other end of the spectrum. Leads to some very diverse wines. We fall somewhere in the middle.

Bright lemon yellow color. Ripe pear with lemon custard and a hint of mango. Classic Ritchie profile and aromatics are present. Very rich, very full opulence balanced by good acidity. Long, full fruit.

2015 Pinot Noir Cuvee De Trois

The vineyards for this wine are all located in the heart of the Russian River Valley, approximately 15-18 miles from the Pacific Ocean. They represent a variety of soil types, viticultural practices and clonal selections, but each carries the overiding characteristics of the best of the Russian River Valley. The blend varies from year to year. This year it includes wine from our Trenton Estate Vineyard, Trenton View, Saralee’s, Catie’s Corner, Ritchie, Solas, and Great Oak. Very intense red, dark cherry, raspberry on the nose. Dark plum on the palate, smooth tannins, long finish. Serious wine!

2015 Pinot Noir Trenton Estate

$72.00

Sometimes a year comes along that just does not fit the mold. A committed terroirist prizes a sense of place and often feels a wine is not "proper" if it does not exhibit that. But once in a while, a wine can be so utterly delicious that this short coming is overlooked. Many of the 2015 Russian River Valley Pinot Noirs are in this category. Rich, full, and delicious now, but not really representative of the Russian River Valley to me. My belief is that the sense of place will show in time, but right now, it is overshadowed by the sheer voluptuousness of the vintage.

Gorgeous aromas of red berries and cherries with a slight hind of mint. In the mouth, it is amazingly lush, with just enough acid to brighten it. Silky and full, the finish is long and smooth. I predict a bright future for this wine, but it hard to resist!

2016 Chardonnay Cuvee de Trois

$30.00

When relying on feral (native) yeasts for fermentation of chardonnay, you occasionally have barrels that are slow to complete. Such was the case in 2016. As long as there are viable yeast present and actually fermentation taking place (albeit slowly) we prefer to let nature take its course. Some barrels in 2016 really tested our resolve, taking nearly two years to complete their fermentation. In the end, we decided to create a small lot blend, using some of the Ritchie, Hawk Hill and our Trenton Estate wines The long aging on the lees had resulted in yeast autolysis, the same process that gives some champagnes their creamy bread dough notes, resulting in wines that were more about process than place .

Tasting notes:

Wonderfully rich and complex. The rich fruit of each of the three vineyards is there but the forward fruit has been modified and complimented with a wonderful, mouth filling impression of flaky pastry dough, sort of like a freshly baked apple and pear tart. The balancing acidity keeps everything in balance. This wine reminds me of a wine made by Matanzas Creek Winery back in the 80's. They called it Journey, in reference to the long time it took from grape to bottle and the many changes it made along the way, from fresh and fruity to a dark place before it came out the other side as a totally different wine. Sadly, I was only able to taste it once as it sold out instantly, but I always felt that it would continue to evolve much like a grand marque champagne. I have no idea if I was correct but I am going to following this one with keen interest.

2016 Chardonnay Trenton Estate

$55.00

Our Estate vineyard, with vines planted in 1969 and a few years later, has always produced very singular wines. Some, such as the 1975 and 1977, are not only alive but still beautiful wines. In many years, however, the wines were awkward and clumsy in their youth. When Joe Swan did his annual wine evaluation dinners, he would often proclaim, upon tasting the most current wine, that it was time to rip out the chardonnay. However, when he tasted the prior years wine he would decide that on second thought, the wine was too good to do that! Things haven't changed much in the ensuing years. A year ago I tasted the wine and thought that it didn't have a future. It was closed and awkeard. This month though, tasting an open bottle over several days, I was reminded how special these vines truly are, producing in good years just over 1 barrel of incredibly complex and unique wine. Perhaps it is the vines age, the small berried, small clustered selection of chardonnay, the incredibly long time between fruit set and harvest or maybe just the spot of ground on which they are planted, but whatever the reason I have never encountered fruit quite like this.

Tasting notes:

At first sniff the aroma might be mistaken for oxidation. Grilled almonds, creme brûlee, and maybe reisling like petrol notes come to mind, but the color, straw with a hint of green, belies that notion. Along with these aromas there is an abundance of rich fruit, more stone fruit than the typical tropical or apple aromas you might expect. In the mouth it is very rich and powerful but with a mouthwatering edge of acidity. I think that this wine is magical but if you are looking for main-stream chardonnay sameness, this might not by your wine.

2016 Pinot Noir DNA

$45.00

DNA vineyard is one of the four contiguous vineyards here in Trenton that we source pinot noir from (Trenton Estate, Trenton View, and Solas being the others). All exhibit the characteristics of the Laguna Ridge Neighborhood in their lush middle richness, great acidity, dark red fruit and elements of oriental spice, but each has their own unique personality.

Tasting notes:

Dark red cherries, cardamom, rose petal and fresh forest floor. It is a bit plush, with the acidity being less predominate than its neighbors. A soft yet long finish is balanced by a bit of tannin. It is drinking very well now but should continue to drink well for the next 3-5 years.

2016 Pinot Noir Saralee's

$45.00

The wine is typically floral and red fruited but this year it is darker and denser, verging on dark cherries and berries. It is also richer and denser in the mouth with more tannin than we usually see, a characteristic that all of our 2016's seem to have in common. Of all of the Saralee's pinot noirs to date, this is probably the most unctuous to date. (I have been wanting to use that word for awhile now!).

2017 Grenache Blanc Catie's Corner

$26.00

We make two different wines from Catie's Corner GB grapes each year; a traditional white wine in which the grapes are whole cluster pressed before fermentation in small stainless steel drums, and a second wine in which we treat it just like our pinot noir, with fermentation on the skins for up to three weeks before aging in older, neutral barrels. The latter is labeled Cuvée Orange.

Pretty aromas of hibiscus and delicate tropical fruit lead to rich flavors of bosc pear and white peach. It is rich but racy at the same time. A wonderfully satisfying white wine that is a delightful alternative to chardonnay. Not that we have anything against chardonnay, but it is certainly nice to have an alternative!

Although the term orange wine refers to its being somewhere between and white and red wine, the wine actually has an orange tint to it! Aromatically it is also reminiscent of oranges. Not normal, typical oranges but some exotic, wild orange. There are aromas of flowers and herbs as well. Although I don't think of the texture as being that much like a red wine, it is definitely fuller bodied, more viscous and more structured than a white wine. The flavors follow through from the aromas, with a richness that almost implies a hint of sweetness. An intriguing and utterly delicious wine!

2018 Valdiguie Northern Sonoma

$34.00

Although not on the label, the fruit is from Dan Teldeschi's Vineyard in Dry Creek Valley. Dan is the nephew of the grower that Joe Swan made his legendary wine from in 1970. It was labeled Gamay, as it was erroneously known at the time (also referred to as Napa Gamay), This was probably due to the grapes slow maturing nature at low sugar levels. The light and fruity wines that it made resembled the wines of Beaujolais, France which is made from the non-related gamay grape.

Tasting notes:

Aromas of bright red cherries, with a hint of blackberry and pomegranate predominate. It is fresh and quaffable but with a hint of seriousness as well. It is a delightfully light bodied wine but still full of flavor. Sadly, it has become kind of hip and cool in the market. I like it because it is simply delicious no matter what others think!

2019 Syrah ROSE Trenton Estate

$28.00

We have been around long enough to remember when Rose meant a ceramic jug, or laser sweet white zinfandel! It's amazing what a few decades can do to the reputation of Rose! It is now hot, hip, and cool. We used a block of our Trenton Estate Syrah, pressing on top of the already squeezed Gewurztraminer skins and Viognier skins, the whole clusters of Syrah were lightly pressed to taste, and then fermented in stainless steel barrels. Beautiful color this year, delicate, crisp Rose has all the characteristics you want from top flight grapes, a perfect summer wine!

From the Robb Report:

From one of Northern California’s old-school producers—Joseph Swan (with more than 50 vintages under its belt)—comes a rosé with no reference points. Just try to wrap your head around this explanation: “Whole clusters were lightly pressed on top of already pressed Gewürztraminer and Viognier skins.” The result is exotic—perfumed aromas of stone fruit and almonds on the nose. On the palate, complex layers of plum, apricot, and mango are set off by crushed herbs and orange zest.
