2016 Bennie's Blend

We created this Syrah Grenache blend to honor my Father Benedetto “Bennie” Cassara. Dad took his Father Angelo’s passion for wine and turned it into a business. Where Grandpa “Sam” made wine for himself, his friends and family, Dad chose to make wine for everyone to enjoy. Dad loved to work in the vineyard the picture on the label was taken in 1999. We decided to blend the two most recently planted varietals on the Estate Vineyard into a blend for Dad. The blend is 70% Syrah and 30% Grenache in this offering and the Grenache brings dark cherry and black plumb to the blend whereas the Syrah brings blackberry and the signature peppery finish. Red meats and game will go well with this Syrah Grenache blend. Also, mushroom and pepper sauces will work well. Most seafood will not work with this wine. Mild meats such as chicken, turkey and pork should be stayed away from as well. Enjoy Bennie’s Blend.

2017 Barbera

Barbera has long filled-in the low slopes and valleys of Northern Italy. It is considered alesser wine to Nebbiolo and, therefore, does not earn the best grape-growing real estate (such as South-facing slopes on hills above the ‘Nebbia’ or fog) in Italy. Despite its lowly position, Barbera is the quintessential ‘wine of the people,’ it is meant to be enjoyed young. Barbera is a dark-skinned wine grape variety found in several Italian wine regions, including its native Piedmont, Emilia-Romagna, Puglia, Campania and even the island regions, Sicily, and Sardinia. At the turn of the 21st Century, it was Italy's third most-commonly planted red wine grape, after Sangiovese and Montepulciano. The fruit in this offering comes from Estelle Vineyards and has an intense ruby red color and a nose full of berries, flowers, spices, and jammy flavor. On the pallet you may taste flavors of cherries, strawberries, and raspberries, and when young can have intense aromas of blackberries as well. It has a good amount of tannins, but is not too aggressive, and has a light body with a very high acidity, which makes it the perfect wine to pair with rich foods like rich dark meats such as beef, lamb, and most cuts of pork, chicken thighs, mushrooms, cheeses like blue cheese, higher tannin foods like root vegetables, roast pork, Italian style sausages, pizzas with sausage, and pastas with meat and cooked tomato sauces.

2017 Grenache

The fruit for our 2017 Grenache is from the Kaerskov Vineyard which is located near Ballard.This fruit ripens late and needs hot, dry conditions so it has a long growing season. While its most famously grown throughout France, the grape itself likely originated in Spain, where it is called ‘Garnacha’ and thrives due to its tolerance to hot and arid climates. It has a medium-bodied taste due to its higher alcohol but has a deceptively lighter color and is semi-translucent. The vintage offers extraordinarily complex and intense notes of black currants, black cherries, leather, spices, and roasted nuts. On the palate you may pick up on some spicy notes, berry-flavors (raspberry and strawberry), and hints of white pepper but with the right amount of acidity on the finish. This wine pairs nicely with slow-roasted lamb, stews, duck, veal, grilled portabello mushrooms, honey roasted veggies like carrots, creamy cheeses, and charcuterie boards.

2017 Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is an old grape, first being referenced in the 13th Century, it makes up 8% of the grapes grown in the Piedmont Region which is northwest of Italy and borders Switzerland and France. The name comes from the Italian word “nebbia” which means fog. The Nebbiolo grape is responsible for 3 styles of wine Barolo, Barbaresco and of course Nebbiolo. The grape produces lightly colored red wines which can be highly tannic in youth with scents of smoke and roses. As they age, they can take on a brick orange hue at the rim of the glass with floral aromas, wild herbs, cherries, raspberries, and prunes. This wine pairs well with fatty meats, rib eye steak, beef tenderloin, braised duck, and of course Parmigiana-Reggiano.

2017 Pinot Noir Estate

The 2017 vintage of this 100% Santa Rita Hills Pinot Noir was processed at our Buellton location and bottled in September 2020. Sadly, this will be the last fruit we use from our Estate Vineyard as the property is pending sale. The wine has been aged 3-years in French Oak and has all the great traits you expect from a Santa Rita Hills Pinot Noir that are rich, fruity, and lush in style. This wine is an elegant and intense bodied red with medium ruby coloring, well balanced with low tannins and medium-high acidity. Bold rich flavors of black cherry and raspberry merge with notes of dark, juicy currants, bright red strawberry, and subtle allspice undertones to complement a luxurious, velvety mouthfeel. This year’s vintage will not disappoint Pinot lovers. Food pairings that go great with this year’s vintage include bacon-stuffed mushrooms, roasted beef tenderloin, veal, plank grilled Salmon steaks, roast pork loin with potatoes and herbs with a simple mushroom sauce, mushroom Risotto, white sauced pizza, and baby back ribs cooked over an oak fire. It pairs nicely with Brie, Gruyere, and goat cheeses as well.

2017 Sangiovese

The 2013 Sangiovese was so successful that Casa Cassara decided to make this sought-after varietal again and this time we doubled down and produced 200 cases. Winemaker, Mikael Siguoin, sourced the fruit from the Sanger Marianello Vineyards in the Santa Ynez Valley. On the nose you may find a scent of smoked pork ribs and hints of tobacco and oregano. When you present this wine to your taste buds look for tart cherry, plum, and a slight bit of fig. Pair this wine with rare steaks, roasted game birds (or wild boar), rich chicken or mushroom dishes or anything with tomato sauce such as Spaghetti and meatballs, and ravioli alla marinara. Grilled vegetables are a great pairing with this red too! Try a pizza with roasted veggies!

2017 Sauvignon Blanc

The 2017 Sauvignon Blanc was barrel fermented for 18 months in neutral French oak with some native yeast. Expect exotic tropical fruit aromatics, passion fruit and grapefruit on the pallet. The wine has great acidity and is long on the finish with notes of lemon, verbena, and lime. This vintage was finished with cross flow filtration prior to bottling for a crisper, cleaner flavor, and color. This wine pairs nicely with white meats including Chicken, Pork Chop and Turkey. Fish including Tilapia, Sea Bass, Trout, Cod, Halibut, Mussels, Crab, Lobster, and Clams go very nicely with this wine. Additionally, try more briny and sour cheeses like Goat’s milk cheese, Yogurt, and Crème fraiche.

2017 Syrah

Syrah is typically bold and full-bodied, with aromatic notes of smoke, black fruit, and pepper spice. This year’s vintage has a range of flavors, from smoke, bacon, herbs, red and black fruits, white and black pepper, to floral violet notes. Our fruit for this vintage comes from the Tierra Alta vineyards located in Ballard Canyon and it takes on flavors of vanilla and baking spice from its time in an oak barrel and has medium tannins and medium acidity. When you taste this Syrah, you will be greeted with a punch of flavor that tapers off and then has a spicy peppery note in the aftertaste. With its massive full-bodied taste, this Syrah pairs great with bold foods. You can pair it with anything from a blue cheeseburger to barbecue and the trick is to bring out the subtle nuances in the wine which you cannot do with bland foods. Other foods to consider for pairing include any pizza with meat on it, garlic mashed potatoes, grilled meats with a dry rub like a ribeye, grilled veggies, venison, aged cheeses like Gouda or smoked Gouda, barbecue chicken, duck, and lamb.

2018 Arneis

The Arneis Grape dates to the 15th century in the Piedmont area of Italy. Arneis (literally: little rascal, in the Piedmont dialect) is called so because it is regarded as somewhat difficult to grow. Arneis is a white wine with red wine characteristics and is also sometimes referred to as Nebbiolo Blanc. Again, this year, this fruit comes from the Tierra Alta Vineyards. The nose is very floral, and the outstanding flavors are almonds, pears, apples, and vanilla. Try pairing Arneis with less-intensely flavored dishes such as creamy pastas, chicken, turkey, seafood, salads, light soups, simply prepared veal, pork, chicken, and creamy cheeses. It is a great complement to fresh herbs like tarragon.

2018 Sam's Dago Red

We blended this wine in honor of my Grandfather Angelo “Sam” Cassara. Grandpa came to the US in 1911 and worked as a barber in Chicago. When WWI broke out, he was drafted into the American Army where he earned his citizenship. In 1919 Grandpa returned to his native Sicily, sold the family farm, and married Grandma. They returned to Chicago and raised their family. Like most immigrants he made his own wine. His was a blend of red and white grapes like Chianti and we have continued that tradition with our Sam’s Dago Red. My father, Bennedetto, helped. Grandpa would go to the basement every night before dinner and fill a pitcher with his creation, affectionately known as Dago Red. The family would drink the wine out of water glasses. This wine is a very easy drinking red wine and pairs nicely with any type of Italian dishes with meat and red sauce, pastas, red meats, or you can just share a bottle with friends.

2019 Grenache Blanc

Grenache Blanc is a white grape that is genetically related to the red grape Grenache. Grenache Blanc is the fourth most widely planted white grape in France. This grape produces full bodied wines with crisp acids. The nose has hints of citrus, honeysuckle, white peach, green apple, and mandarin orange aromas. On the pallet you will experience the rich flavor of juicy honeydew melon on the front end and the wine finishes with a tart green apple on the back end. The crispness of Grenache Blanc shows well at low temperatures. The fruit for this offering is from Tierra Alta Vineyards where the cooler temperatures allow the grapes to develop crisper acidity and more mineral characteristics. Beautiful peach colored wine with aromatics and flavors of strawberry, watermelon and flint finishing with lingering flavors of pomegranate and citrus. This grape originates from Spain and the south of France. The fruit for our Grenache Rosé comes from two different vineyards Tierra Alta and Rancho Rio Vista. The nose highlights the distinct strawberry characteristic that comes from Grenache and boasts a varying array of other fruits such as raspberries or oak spice. Delicate on the palate this wine reveals a lovely citrus and various berry flavors such as strawberries as well as watermelon with lingering flavors of pomegranate. The acid is bright and well-balanced, making it a perfect wine to enjoy on its own or with salads and charcuterie boards. A premier blend of non-vintage traditional Portuguese varietals (49.5% Touriga Nacional, 26.6% Tinta Madeira, 17.3% Tinto Cao, 5.6% Souzao, 1.0% Palamino), this aged Tawney has the essence of fire roasted nuts, deep honey, blood orange and subtle flavors including graphite, green peppercorn, hazelnut, almond, butterscotch, and graham cracker. The addition of Casa Cassara Brandy intensifies these flavors and makes your sipping experience unique. Our Tawney Port wine is best served just below room temperature, around 60 °F. When pairing this port think pecan pie, almond biscotti, or regionally inspired Portuguese salted almond cake, or caramel covered cheesecake. This offering is a lesson in Casa Cassara Winery history. Included in this vertical are 8 bottles of Casa Cassara Winery & Vineyards 100% Santa Rital Hills Estate Grown Pinot Noir. Beginning with 2010 and including every vintage up to 2017. This is a very limited offering as the older wines are in short supply. The 2010 through 2013 vintages were produced and bottled entirely at our Estate Winery on the vineyard site in the Santa Rita Hills. The 2014 vintage was the first one produced and bottled at our facility in Buellton. You can taste your way through past Casa Cassara Wimemakers, notably Andy Kann, Kyle Knapp, and Mikael Sigouin. In an interesting side note current winemaker Mikael Sigouin worked under Andy Kahn when Andy was making the 2000 and 2001 vintages of Casa Cassara Wine. Chris King an excellent winemaker in his own right and our vineyard manager made this Grenache which also comes from The Santa Ynez Valley. It is lighter that our previous offering and has strong taste of tart cherry, it has a more subtle nose and a smoother finish that the previous offering and for that reason we are serving it before the Dago Red.

The fruit for this offering comes from Tierra Alta Vineyards, Kyle put the grapes through a 3 day cold soak to extract structure and tannins, the wine was fermented with 10% stem inclusion for spice and aged 16 months in large 500 liter barrels. On the nose you get earthy minerals, black cherry and hints of tobacco. In the mouth it has light tannins, black cherry, raspberry and pepper on the finish. There is a perfect blend of fruit and earth with hints of oak that remind me of bourbon.

The Fruit for the 2015 Grenache again comes from Tierra Alta Vineyards. Kyle started this wine and Mikael finished it up. It is 60% Grenache and 40% Grenache Gris, the wines were fermented and aged separately and blended just prior to bottling. The lighter color shows the influence of the Grenache Gris. On the nose you may get a hint of a fresh baked cherry Danish Pastry. On the pallet it is all fresh raspberries up front and spice or pepper on the finish

The 2015 Sauv Blanc began its life under the watchful eye of Kyle Knapp again he barrel fermented for 18 months in neutral French Oak using some native yeast Expect exotic tropical fruit aromatics, passion fruit and grapefruit on the pallet. The wine has great acidity and is long on the finish with notes of Lemon, verbena and lime. Now the difference between this and the 2014, Mikael cross flow filtered this wine prior to bottling for a crisper cleaner flavor.

Barbera is a red Italian wine grape variety that, as of 2000, was the third most-planted red grape variety in Italy (after Sangiovese and Montepulciano). It produces good yields and is known for deep color, full body, low tannins and high levels of acid. This varietal grows well here in California, the fruit in this offering comes from Estelle Vineyards and is farmed by John Belfy at Bona Terra Vineyard Management.This vintage offers a very intense aroma of fresh red cherries and blackberries. The wine is still aged 3 years in large format oak barrels. This offering which was bottled in late August is finally ready to meet the world. As expected this wine tastes young compared to the previous vintage and the nose is closer to a typical Pinot than the previous vintage. We expect big things as it continues to age in the bottle. Foods that go great with this year’s vintage include bacon-stuffed mushrooms, Peking duck, roasted beef tenderloin, plan-grilled Salmon steaks, Roast Pork Loin and potatoes and herbs, a simple mushroom sauce. It pairs nicely with Brie, Gruyére, and goat cheeses as well.

Vintage 2016 Sam's Dago Red

We call this blend Sam's Dago Red and we blended this wine in honor of my Grandfather Angelo “Sam” Cassara. Grandpa came to the US in 1911 and worked as a barber in Chicago. When WWI broke out he was drafted into the American Army where he earned his citizenship. In 1919 Grandpa returned to his native Sicily, sold the family farm and married Grandma. They returned to Chicago and raised their family. Like most immigrants he made his own wine. His was a blend of red and white grapes similar to Chianti. My father helped. Grandpa would go to the basement every night before dinner and fill a pitcher with his creation, affectionately known as Dago Red. The 2013 Sangiovese was so successful that Casa Cassara decided to make this sought after varietal again and this time we doubled down and produced 200 cases. This time winemaker Mikael Siguoin sourced the fruit from the Sanger Marinello Vineyards in the Santa Ynez Valley. On the nose you may find a scent of smoked pork ribs and hints of Tobacco and Oregano. When you present this wine to your taste buds look for tart cherry, plum and a slight bit of fig. Vintage 2016 Syrah Reserve

This Syrah comes from the Tierra Alta Vineyards which is located in Ballard Canyon. This is a very steep and high altitude vineyard. The limestone rich soil produces an excellent Sryah with a medium to heavy body it has blackberry tones finished with pepper. We suggest pairing this Syrah with a nice Steak grilled over Red Oak. We picked the best barrel of Syrah from the batch and created this special Reserve Syrah.

The Arneis Grape dates back to the 15th century in the Piedmont area of Italy. Arneis (ltereally means: little rascal, in the Piedmont dialect) is called so because it is regarded as somewhat difficult to grow. Arneis is a white wine with red wine characteristics and is also sometimes referred to as Nebbiolo Blanc. Again this year this fruit comes from the Tierra Alta Vineyards.
