2014 Russian River Valley Zinfandel

91 points by Wine Enthusiast!
$45.00
Library Selection 2014 Russian River Valley Zinfandel (Big Club Only)The 2014 August Briggs Russian River Valley Zinfandel was a special, one-time only bottling for us as we were able to secure some amazing fruit from the Landy Vineyard. This vineyard, while in the Russian River Valley AVA, is much cooler than our Calistoga Zinfandels and offers a nice contrast in styles. The Landy Vineyard sits at 1000-foot elevation in the Sweetwater Springs District of the Russian River Valley. This gorgeous vineyard sits atop a knoll above the fog line giving it longer sun exposure than most of the Russian River Valley. Now at five years of age the wine has matured to offer up a knockout array of aromas and flavors. This wine offers up briary raspberry aromas, grilled plum, sassafras and oak aromas. This elegant wine has an old world charm with dried fruit and spice flavors with sage and cedar as added aromatics. On the palate it is now smooth with a hint of tannin on the finish but lingers with flavors of raspberry and Asian spice. This wine drinks well tonight and is a perfect pair with thin-crust pizza topped with basil and fennel sausage. 125 cases produced

2017 Napa Valley 'Page-Nord' Syrah

Fall 2019 Release
$38.00
2017 Page-Nord Vineyard Napa Valley SyrahThe 2017 August Briggs Page-Nord Vineyard Napa Valley Syrah is located just south the town of Yountville in the middle of the Napa Valley. The fruit this vineyard produces is a direct reflection of the land it is grown upon, providing deep, dark, intense and opulent flavors. This wine exudes a unique Syrah essence and vineyard expression in this diligently-farmed wine by grower Jeff Page. For this vintage we set aside 10% of the grapes and did a whole-cluster fermentation and then blended it back into the rest of the wine adding even more complexity to this profound wine. Dark purple in color, this wine seduces you from the time the cork is pulled. Layers of aromas include black plums, pepper, blackberry jam, licorice and wisps of smoked meat. This substantial wine displays a beautiful array of flavors including mocha, dark fruits, black pepper and spicy oak notes that interplay nicely with ripe tannins and lasting blackberry flavors. The structure ensures that it will age for years to come. A vintage to remember! 150 cases

2017 Two Moon Vnyrd Dry Creek Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Fall 2019 Release
$55.00
2017 Two Moon Vineyard Dry Creek Valley Cabernet SauvignonJulie Simpson’s remote “Two Moon Vineyard,” while within the Dry Creek appellation, is located on a steep slope that sprawls across the McCray Ridge 1,800 feet high. This vineyard is especially appealing because of its razor thin soils and high altitude. So high in fact, it is situated above the fog line and begins each day in sunlight, rather than clouds or fog.Our 2017 is one of our favorites that we have ever produced from this vineyard due to a series of heat spikes at the end of the growing season that quickly pushed the Cabernet grapes to perfect ripeness. Deep purple colored, the 2017 vintage has gorgeous fruit notes of cassis, dark cherry and boysenberry over earthy notes of grilled herbs and charred oak, plus a hint of graphite. The full-bodied palate is rich and expressive, yet still fresh and inviting leading through a supple mid-palate that finishes very, very long with some savory notes of dried spice. This is one of those wines that is so tasty in every way that it sets your heart racing. Buy a case of this and check back in every 2 years for an incredible drinking experience over the next 25 years! 153 cases

2017 Ancient Vines Calistoga Napa Valley Zinfandel

Fall 2019 Release
$45.00
2017 Ancient Vine Calistoga-Napa Valley ZinfandelThis is our fifth bottling of our ‘Ancient Vines’ Zinfandel. This wine is a product of our continuous search to source grapes from old heritage vines that showcase the beauty and magnificence these vines are capable of. The Canard Vineyard, formerly the Tucker Ranch, is one of the oldest grapevine plantings in all of the Napa Valley. The property was the original homestead of Captain Reason P. Tucker, who gained notoriety for leading the efforts to rescue the survivors of the ill-fated Donner Party. From this majestic site we get fruit from vines 142 years old (planted 1877). This Ancient Vine Zinfandel dazzles with intense aromatics, pleases the palate and stays with you on the finish. Dark garnet with hints of crimson in color, the wine is a mélange of aromas and flavors. Notes of blackberry, cocoa powder, sweet holiday spices, smoky oak, clove and root beer serve up these intense aromas. This wine exhibits what we love most about our Zinfandels, balance and refinement paired with rich fruit and an overall drinking pleasure. Get plenty of extras of this one as it sells out upon release. This Zin drinks well now, but will age nicely for another 7-10 years. A mere 97 cases produced.

2017 Calistoga Napa Valley Charbono

Fall 2019 Release
$38.00
2017 Napa County CharbonoCharbono is one of the rarest grape varieties in California, with only 86 acres planted. About half that total is here in Calistoga and we believe we source the best grapes from our neighbors here in town, the Frediani family. Planted back in the 1920s, the Frediani Charbono vineyard produces low yields with the ultimate in flavor concentration. Charbono was the last grape varietal we picked in 2017 and was a week after the fires started in October of 2017. We were fortunate that the wine did not suffer dramatically from smoke taint as the wine now bottled shows off its typical characteristics. The wine has a garnet hue with shades of purple and upon a few swirls offers complex aromas of tart cherry, pluot, vanilla and a wisp of dried spices. On the palate it is medium bodied, well balanced with soft tannins. The lovely finish is the signature of this flavorful and remarkably balanced wine. While there is a hint of smoke it adds an overall complexity to the wine that will evoke that vintage. 142 cases

2017 Russian River Valley Pinot Meunier

$42.00
2017 Russian River Valley Pinot MeunierPinot Meunier is one of a few grapes that are more well-known for making sparkling wines than still ones. We have made a scintillating dry wine from these grapes for over 15 years and have found the wine to be grapes to be very aromatic much like pinot noir, as well as exuding an exotic spicy aroma as found in Rhone varieties. This wine makes a great porch quaffer, as well as, a perfect match with light to medium menu items. For the 2017 Pinot Meunier the first thought that comes to mind on first sip is elegance. This wine has a lighter body but does not compromise flavor or complexity. In the glass, the vibrant garnet color immediately evokes images of berries and roses. Notes of vanilla mix with bergamot orange and complement the wild strawberry and cranberry jelly aromas, while richer flavors of red plum and spice further add complexity. The palate has a smooth texture with nice balancing acidity that gives it a long and memorable finish. The fruit for this wine was picked at 23.9° brix on September 5, 2017. After hand sorting, the clusters were destemmed into a small open-top fermenter. After a two-day cold soak, the must was inoculated with Assmanhausen yeast. The cap was punched-down by hand, twice daily. Following primary fermentation the wine was inoculated for malolactic fermentation and barreled down to traditional burgundian barrels. The barrels used were 20% new oak from the Allier forest in France, and 80% two and three year old French barrels. The wine was aged in barrel for 9 months. Only 175 cases produced.

2017 Old Vines Zinfandel

New Release!
$38.00
2017 Old Vines ZinfandelNow in our 23rd bottling of ‘Old Vines’ Zinfandel we realize this wine is not only about an enjoyment of the senses but also a tribute to the revered old vine vineyards in California. The 2017 Old Vines Zinfandel is sourced from two historic vineyards. The first is from our old friends the Luvisi family whose grapes were planted in 1908. This historic vineyard of head-trained vines at the edge of town in Calistoga instills all the ripe aromatics that add nuance and complexity to this wine. The second vineyard is from the Del Barba family down in the delta town of Oakley. Their 109 year old block of Zinfandel flourishes in the Dehli sand that forces the vines to send roots all the way down to the water table, sometimes 20 feet below the surface. These unique conditions stress the vines to produce grapes that are bold and audacious bursting with fruit! This 2017 vintage wine displays the classic aromas of old vine zinfandel. It is very aromatic with notes of ripe raspberry jam, red plum, licorice, cinnamon, white pepper and sweet spices. The wine has a fresh and clean entry with fleshy tannins that envelope the palate and are complemented by a layer of cocoa powder and nutmeg. This multi-dimensional, complex Zin exhibits the characteristics of these majestic old vineyards. Thankfully both vineyards were picked a three to four weeks before the damaging fires of October 2017. 225 cases

2017 Gunsalus Vineyard Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

$50.00
2017 Gunsalus Vineyard Russian River Valley Pinot Noir The 2017 Gunsalus Vineyard Russian River Valley Pinot Noir is our second vineyard designate Pinot Noir from this meticulously farmed vineyard. We have found this treasured site in the cool Green Valley section of the Russian River Valley to produce some of the most distinct and scrumptious Pinot Noir grapes. We picked the smaller and more treasured, N4 block, to bottle on its own which resulted in a special 2 barrel production. This block which is planted on vigor-reducing rootstocks, resulting in fewer grape clusters of intense flavor, produces a wine that mirrors the unique land on which they are grown. This nose offers enticing flavors of black cherry, plum, and nutmeg with hints of cinnamon. The flavors are very full, with more berries and star anise echoing the aromas. The nose is full with exotic aromas of ripe plum, crushed black cherries and blueberries, then some Asian spice, oak and a hint of Rose petals. On the palate the wine's rich mouthfeel is supported with fruit through the mid-palate to the moderate drying tannins on the finish. This is a sumptuous and concentrated wine balanced with beautiful fruit purity. As is typical of our richer Pinot Noirs, patience might be required to achieve full enjoyment. Drink now through 2024. 50 cases were produced.

2017 Carneros Pinot Noir

$45.00
2017 Carneros Pinot Noir Our Carneros Pinot Noir once again comes from the Sinskey vineyard, Amigo #3, located in the rolling hills of the Carneros district just southwest of the city of Napa. This extremely well farmed, certified organic vineyard was planted over 30 years ago and ripens unusually sl due to the oft-present morning fog which makes this an exceptionally prized site for California Pinot Noir. The 2017 Carneros Pinot Noir is a gorgeously rich and round red wine, a true showcase of the Carneros appellation and sure to please all who get to savor this delicacy. An effusive and heady aroma sweeps across the bouquet of red and black cherries, clove, violets, and sarsaparilla. It is fruit forward with a burst of ripe berries, cola nut, oak and a tinge of toast. The ripe style of Pinot Noir is reflected by a long juicy finish of red-fruit, round tannins and a lingering pure finish. Pair with seasoned pork and fowl dishes and don’t forget it’s also fun to pair with gourmet chocolates. As always this fruit was handled to the same ‘by-hand’ treatment of all our Pinot Noirs. It was destemmed into open top fermenters for daily punch-downs which gently extract the flavor and body. After a gentle pressing the wine was inoculated for malo-lactic fermentation and barreled down to traditional burgundian barrels. The barrels used were 40% new French oak and 60% two year old French barrels. The wine was aged in barrel for 9 months. 125 cases produced.

2017 Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

$45.00
2017 Russian River Valley Pinot Noir We believe that the quality of wine we produce is only as good as the fruit we start with and the fruit for our 2017 vintage comes from the Gunsalus Vineyard, in the very cool Green Valley of the Russian River Valley AVA. We source from two separate blocks as we like to exhibit the unique characteristics of each block which showcases the fruity exuberance of California wine and the noble complexity of Burgundy. Upon first swirl in the glass the aromas of violets, tangy raspberry, clove and tea leaves mingle together. Bright cherry and raspberry flavors are balanced with layers of cinnamon, and a touch of light oak. Smooth and round on the entry, the palate is rich, yet supple. Integrated tannins balance out the finish. If there ever was a Pinot Noir meant to be paired with food - this is it! The barrels used were 30% new French oak and 70% two year old French barrels. The wine was aged in barrel for 9 months. 238 cases produced.

2017 Dijon Clones Pinot Noir

$45.00
2017 ‘Dijon Clones’ Sonoma County Pinot Noir One of the factors improving the overall quality of Pinot Noir in California is the planting of the so-called ‘Dijon Clones’ of Pinot Noir which we brought in from Burgundy in the 1960's. They are known for their purity of fruit and focused structure. We are fortunate that our friends at Robert Sinskey winery were able to offer to us some amazing ’777’ Dijon Clone fruit from their Ramal Road Vineyard which is located at the southernmost end of the town of Sonoma. For this vintage, much like the previous one in 2016, the wine is lighter with lower alcohol which makes it great for early consumption. This wine is enticingly fragrant with an aroma of Damson plum, dried spice, light oak and lavender. Pomegranate and a touch of tea leaves belie the fresh fruit character. Flavors of cranberry and citrus mix with the earth notes adding depth and intrigue. After hand sorting, the clusters were de-stemmed into a small open-top fermenter. After a two-day cold soak, the must was inoculated with Assmanhausen yeast. The cap was punched-down twice daily, by hand. After a gentle pressing, the wine was inoculated for malo-lactic fermentation and barreled down to traditional burgundian barrels. The barrels used were 30% new French oak and 70% two and three year old French barrels and aged 9 months before bottling. Only 200 cases produced.
